Zusammenfassung:Fifty years after the promulgation of the Sacrosanctum Concilium, this article wants to determine the situation with regard to the aims of the Vatican Council II, that is to increase every day Christian life among the believers to contribute to the union of all believers in Christ. After taking note of the present crisis of ecumenism, coming to a common ecclesiological interpretation is a pressing question. The lack of a consensus about the aim of the ecumenical movement derives essentially from the lack of a consensus about the concept of Church and of its unity. The Sacrosanctum Concilium should not defi ne the church, not even describe it. It was normal to talk about it in sacramental terms. Now it seems that the greatest difficulties in dialogue arise from the different interpretation of the category of «sacrament» – «instrumental cause» in the Thomistic acceptation, «occasional cause» in Ockham’s nominalistic one. Moreover, it must be remembered that Luther was not a systematic; what gives unity to his thought is the existential need to get to the assurance of salvation through a doctrine that can free him from the anxiety caused by Gabriel Biel’s doctrine of justifi cation and how it was overcame with the discovery of his «Gospel».
