Description
Summary:Sacrosanctum Concilium, that promoted the post-conciliar reform of Catholic rituality, also encouraged the development of a critical and scientifi c refl ection on liturgy. First, it infringed the taboo of immutability and intangibility of rites. Secondly, it highlighted the theological dignity of Christian celebration. Especially, the conciliar fathers’ concentration on the actuosa participatio caused the liturgical discipline to become a main subject in theological faculties. Moreover, promoting the renewal of texts and rites entailed the necessity of a «theological, historical, and pastoral ̈ investigation. The article completes this picture by describing the comprehension of liturgy before Vatican II and intercepting the lines of development that the liturgical constitution contributed to determining in the post-conciliar period. As a result, the liturgical science, born at the beginning of the 20th century, anticipated Sacrosanctum Concilium, but it also gained substantial approval and an indication of the things to be done. In the following years, the organization of liturgical studies into historical, theological, and pastoral (anthropological) ones further shaped the discipline that must accomplish an always-broader commitment in the assembly of theological disciplines today.
