Description
Summary:From the fi rst centuries of Christianity on, choosing virginity (or choosing chastity in the case of widows) within the framework of domestic religious life allowed women to escape from the submission to fathers and husbands. The virgins were called «spouses» of Christ and their wedding vows consumed on a religious and spiritual level. With its physical distance from the place of daily life, monasticism by and large challenged family ties: women who chose the monastic life and joined the communities scattered over Egypt in the Late Antiquity, relinquished their family ties. In some cases though, these ties remained and monastic choices similar to those of a biological family reinforced the blood ties. What was at stake was the creation of a new – not biological but spiritual – family. By combining a unitarian and egalitarian rhetoric that also wanted to distinguish and separate with indispensable patriarchal structures, the women in monasteries were mothers, sisters (in some cases incorporated and concealed among the brothers), and daughters. This paper investigates these functions this terminology.
