Summary:The attempt to reconcile Darwin’s evolutionary theory with a «legitimate» theological idea has been at the center of the philosophical and scientific debate ever since the first publishing of The Origin of the Species. Huxley and Lange, for example, distinguished between an «authentic» and a «false» teleology. Although from a different perspective, already Kant (and after him Hegel) made out a difference between diverse modalities of purpose, especially between the «internal» and the «external» purpose: a distinction that, since it allows separating the aim from the immediate connections with human action, still today constitutes a valid logical-conceptual instrument for asking the question of nature’s purpose.
