Summary:The short history of applied ethics is the history of a great success: rarely has an area of academic research obtained similar influence in such a (relatively) short period of time. For this reason, a critical auto-assessment becomes even more important. This essay wants to undertake first steps in this direction following a threefold course: first, it offers a more accurate definition of «applied ethics» and of the reasons for its success; then, its impact on the morals of society is considered; and, as a final point, the style of thought and argumentation distinctive of applied ethics is characterized.
