Description
Summary:This paper considers possibilities of contextual Bible reading, based on experiences in middle- and east-European countries, touched by communism after the World War II, espe-cially Poland. Under soviet impact a special kind of national liberation theology formed in the polish Church. It combined both the national and religious factors. In polish liberation theology, consciousness and confessional liberty were practically equal to political and eco-nomic freedom. Historically this goes back to the Polish partitioning among Russia, Austria, and Prussia (1795-1918). Then national and religious matters were once again fused under the communist regime. Biblical symbols were used to express patriotic values: Egyptian captivity as a metaphor for soviet occupation; passing the Red Sea as a process of national liberation; Moses as an example of a political leader such as Lech Walesa or pope John Paul II etc. This paper investigates the role of Catholicism in a democratic society such as Poland, which is in fact part of the European Union. It deals with problem of biblical symbols, applied to new situation: is Mary still a queen? Can the Bible be of help in building a democratic society, as it was in the process of national liberation?
