Description
Summary:Johann Michael Sailer was one of the most prominent exponents of German Catholicism in the second half of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century. The essay focuses on Sailer as a preacher and orator and thus tries to determine his relationship to the Enlightenment. In doing so, the essay argues in favor of a concept of the Enlightenment that not only describes a certain period of time but also the concerns of the time. The result is that Sailer appears as an enlightened and enlightening preacher and orator, critical of his time, and thus as a representative of a genuine Catholic Enlightenment.
