Summary: | According to Schleiermacher, the historic nature of religion is to be considered scientifically from complementary points of view: the ‘philosophical’ perspective looks for a general definition of religiousness and performs a morphological juxtaposition among the different religious communities; the ‘theological’ perspective attempts a historical reconstruction beginning with the experience of faith of one’s own specific community; ‘philological’ research sees itself as independent and fundamental with respect to the two preceding perspectives. This essay wishes to investigate the theoretical foundations and the concrete results of this set-up, confronting it with contemporary positions and considering the critical evaluations- both positive and negative-that it has stimulated up to this very day. |
