| Summary: | n the light of the methodological indications that emerged from the first international Settimana di studi medioevali del Passo della Mendola (1959), this essay investigates the following aspects via the examination of the three characteristic elements of the canonical condition (liturgical celebration, collegiality, and ties to the bishop):– the clergy’s models of communal life through the associative forms known in the West from the 4th to the 6yh century; – the doctrinal and organizational efforts of the 7th, 8th, and 9th centuries, which culminated in the first rules of Crodegang and Aachen; – the ecclesiastic reform of the 11th and 12th centuries at the peak of the canonical restoration; – the crisis of the 13th century that ended with the emergence of a diarchy of bishops and chapters through the Episcopal elections; – cure of souls; – patrimonial questions; – liturgical and statutory autonomy. |
