Description
Summary:In the era of globalization and of a multitude of religions it is necessary to discern a valid criterion of comprehension that makes it possible to place these phenomena in a relationship. The proposition of Christianity in the global era is based on the memory of the God of the biblical tradition as memory of humanity’s suffering. Developing the universalistic principle of biblical monotheism one is bound to recognize the divine progeny of all people. This monotheism expresses itself in a theology «susceptible to the pain of others». This sensitivity to the pain of others, which characterizes Jesus’ new way of living, can be transcribed by the term «compassion», of which three aspects are to be mentioned: compassion is an inspiration for a new politics of peace, it is the foundation for a new politics of understanding the other, which breaks the violence of the law of the market, and – lastly – compassion leads to the strengthening of the humanized memory. Compassion also lays the grounds for a global ethos, founded in the authority of those who suffer, to which also the religions and the cultures must submit. Compassion is to be understood as the primary provocation of Jesus’ message. Christians today must bear witness first of all to the passion for those who suffer as an expression of their passion for God
