Summary: | In the middle ages, women were not excluded from lay confraternities, not even from the flagellant brotherhoods, which undeniably have a markedly masculine nature. They were actually allowed to enter the fraternities together with men but they only had a limited and relatively confined ‘role’. The problem at present does not consist in ascertaining female membership as such, but rather in understanding the modes and the quality of such participation. The article intends to investigate exactly these factors. This paper focuses on women in the flagellant confraternities of Venice in the 14th century, the scuole di Santa Maria della Carità, di Santa Maria della Misericordia o della Valverde, di San Giovanni Evangelista). A codex of the scuola di San Giovanni Evangelista contains the names of 315 women who joined the scuola before the 1327. It is a priceless and significant document, for its rareness and for the high quantity and quality of the data contained. It offers information concerning the geographical provenience of the women, their background and social life, but above all concerning their religious and devotional preferences. Female parts in the scuola and for the scuola seem to translate into activities of a charitable nature and to assistance and thus represent an alternative to the discipline of the men |
