Description
Summary:Lucrezia Marinella (1571-1653), platonic author of the seventeenth century, is known today especially for her work in defense of women. Her theological and religious works are yet to be rediscovered. This article will introduce three of her books, Il discorso del rivolgimento amoroso dell’huomo verso la somma Bellezza, Venezia 1597, La nobiltà et eccellenza delle donne et i difetti e mancamenti de gli huomini, Venezia 1600, and La vita di Maria Vergine, Venezia 1602 under the aspect of a theology of beauty. The theology of beauty can be considered one of the central themes in Marinella’s work. According to Lucrezia Marinella the beauty of creation is dependent on divine Beauty. Therefore, female beauty is a direct reflection of the Divine and a way to achieve divine Wisdom. Woman, being God’s last creation, is the masterpiece of creation. Mary, as a woman, is a compendium of human perfection and beauty, as Queen of the universe she is prefigured from divine Wisdom and becomes the prototype of all women. But Mary also represents humanity; she is the most excellent way to God and the bond between heaven and earth.
