Description
Summary:This essay offers a reflection on the importance of "Preto velho" and "Preta velha" entities forUmbanda youth considering religi ous intolerance and traditions in modernity. They are therepresentatives of the historical memory of enslavement in Brazil and symbols of the black diasporain the Afro Bra zilian Umbanda religious field. Racism reaches this religious field in the form ofprejudice, discrimination and violence, which produces consequences on the religious identity andsubjectivity of Umbanda young adherents. These entities, in their different senses, can offer youngpeople symbolic instruments to strengthen them in their st ruggles for the positive recognition oftheir religious identities.
