Based on Bachelard’s point of view, we will analyze the hymn IV-19 of Rig- Veda, dedicated to Indra, one of the most important gods of the Indian pantheon. The French philosopher proposes a poetic of reverie, in which he re-interprets the ideas of Empedocles of Agrigento, Greek pre-Socratic thinker. The fundamental notion of his reinterpretation is in the four elements (fire, water, air, earth) as a kind of archetype. The “power” of the poetry, in terms of beauty and expressivity, essentially would depend on the right use of the elements and their combinations. A talented author knows how to do it. Our analysis intends to find a “truth”, hidden in the poem, by Bachelard’s theory. |
