Description
Religion has not abandoned the public sphere, but continues to play a role in it, even if it is ambivalent and changing. Public Theology seeks to offer orientation for a critical and constructive contribution of the churches in the public sphere which is neither excessive nor insufficient. As examples of well and badly succeeded contributions, attention is being given to Brazil, South Africa and Scotland with their respective Reformed theologians. With the founding of the Global Network of Public Theology in 2007, promoted especially by these theologians, a new round of exploration of the concept of public theology and its “glocal” implications has been opened. The present article understands Public Theology as a sincere confession, explication of the church’s mission, to which it remains connected, being oriented, at the same time, by the cross and being, for this reason, kenotic; it is, finally, a theology that cares for the well-being of the community, far beyond its own boundaries. With this text, dealing with ecumenism in the sense of the church’s mission in the interrelations of “the whole inhabited earth”, I wish to honour the teacher, pastor and friend Zwinglio Mota Dias
