| Summary: | A Jewish Aramaic epitaph on a sandstone slab recently found at Zoar is the fourth tombstone of this kind from that village on the southern shore of the Dead Sea. This is a welcome addition not only to the three formerly found (in 1925 and 1944), but also to the very scanty number of dated inscriptions and manuscripts written in the Jewish script after 135 and before the tenth century C.E. The deceased, whose name is not clear enough, died on "Sabbath, 25th of Tevet, in the 1st year of the sabbatical cycle, 386 years after the destruction of the Temple." As the text has more or less the same formula as the other three, it helps to improve some of the generally accepted readings of the formerly published ones, but it does not solve the inconsistency in the double dating. |
