| Summary: | The concept of conscience is a source of controversy. How can the works of Emmanuel Levinas contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon? The author shows how the philosophical criticism of a 'guilty conscience' can be seen from a new point of view. Even if we do have a guilty conscience in regard to others, this does not necessary denote fear and envy, as Nietzsche maintained; it can also be a sign of sensitivity. When practical theology is confronted with this philosophical discourse, its foundations become more differentiated and acquire more depth, and new horizons for ministerial work and theology are opened. |
