Description
Summary:The main aim herein is to understand the range of meanings and emotions given to “being a Jewish” in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil in the beginning of the XXI century. The theoretical referential used to develop the current study belongs to the Social-Historical Psychology which also concerns subjects and identities. This analysis presents interviews and testimonies from an expressive amount of Jewish local residents, who use to go to A.I.C. (Associação Israelita Catarinense). The results herein point out for a special need: the reassessment of the Jewish identity/Judaism related to specific interests inherent in this local collectivity. These interests are connected to the appropriation of some Judaism conventional meanings and the production of possible interpretations about being a Jewish. It is important to mention that this Jewish local identity is drawn according to the interviews made which shows local Jewish people’s life stories as their emotional, affective and intellectual experiences. Besides of having found freedom in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, they have also found a real possibility of becoming social actors able to build up a concrete Judaism that fits to their needs and to the local characteristics of this collectivity they belong to.
