Bayle pourchasse les auteurs de la légende noire qui poursuit Calvin depuis le siècle précédent et brosse un tableau original du Réformateur. La présente étude, qui considère également les articles consacrés à d'autres protagonistes – Berthelier, Bèze, Bolsec, Castellion, Farel et Schultingius – passe en revue les différentes facettes du Calvin historique de Bayle. Elle fait également le point sur l'état des informations bibliographiques disponibles à la fin du XVIIe siècle. In his Historical and Critical Dictionary (1st edition 1696, 2nd edition 1702), Pierre Bayle devotes an important article to John Calvin. In it there are no speculative reflections on Calvinist doctrine, but it does offer some strong historiographical precisions. Bayle attacks the originators of the disparaging legend attached to Calvin for more than a century; he points a new portrait of the Reformer. The present study, which also takes into consideration articles devoted to other protagonists (Berthelier, Bèze, Bolsec, Castellion, Farel, and Schultingius), reviews the different aspects of Bayle's historical Calvin. It also brings into focus the bibliographical information available at the end of the seventeenth century. In seinem Dictionnaire historique et critique (erste Ausg. 1696, zweite Ausg. 1702) liefert Pierre Bayle einen wichtigen Artikel über Calvin. Abwesend sind die spekulativen Gedanken über die calvinische Lehre, statt deren kommt zur Geltung eine kraftvolle historiographische Richtigstellung. Bayle übt seine Kritik an den Autoren der «schwarzen Calvinlegende», die sich seit dem 17. Jahrhundert weiterentwickelt hatte, und er zeichnet ein originales Bild des Reformatoren. Unser Ausatz, der bei Bayle auch die weiteren Protagonisten der Calvingeschichte – Berthelier, Bèze, Bolsec, Farel und Schultingius – berücksichtigt, untersucht die verschiedenen Facetten des historischen Calvin bei Bayle und inhält eine Klarstellung über die bibliographischen Quellen und Informationen, die über Calvin am Ende des 18. Jahrhundert vorhanden waren. |
