Description
Summary:Islamic interpretations heavily impact on political culture and practice in Pakistan. Religious extremisms, which repeatedly have been resulting directly from state politics in Pakistan, become at times dominant to an extent that they threaten to undermine the foundations of state and society. Radical groups engage in several jihads: internal sectarian, regional jihads in Afghanistan and India, in addition to global jihads against the West. Analyzing transformation processes of politicized religion, introducing institutional structures and political dynamics, the article portrays the main trends in political Islam in Pakistan, striving to understand how the failure of political Islamist projects fostered the popularity of new post-lslamist neofundamentalisms.
