Description
Summary:How have religious institutions responded to modernity’s imperative regarding the acceptance of religious pluralism? By examining the paths of two religious institutions, the Azhar and the Holy See, this research holds that the modernization process has given them a renewed life to express their hegemony over the social sphere, now differentiated from the political sphere. This builds on Casanova’s idea of public religion and Gramsci’s idea of cultural hegemony. A discourse analysis on two sets of documents is conducted: the Azhar Documents (2011) and the Vatican II Documents (1965). The research argues that Vatican II led the Catholic Church to become an ‘ecumenical hegemon.’ However, a parallelism in the thought of the Azhar prevents it from ensuring control over the cultural field.
