By examining the paths of two religious institutions, the Azhar and the Holy See, this research holds that the modernization process has given them a renewed life to express their hegemony over the social sphere, now differentiated from the political sphere. This builds on Casanova’s idea of public religion and Gramsci’s idea of cultural hegemony. A discourse analysis on two sets of documents is conducted: the Azhar Documents (2011) and the Vatican II Documents (1965). The research argues that Vatican II led the Catholic Church to become an ‘ecumenical hegemon.’ However, a parallelism in the thought of the Azhar prevents it from ensuring control over the cultural field.Come hanno risposto le istituzioni religiose all’imperativo della modernita di accettare il pluralismo religioso? Esaminando i percorsi di due istituzioni religiose, l’Azhar e la Santa Sede, questa ricerca sostiene che il processo di modernizzazione ha dato loro una rinnovata vita per esprimere la loro egemonia sulla sfera sociale, ormai differenziata dalla sfera politica. Cio si basa sull’idea di religione pubblica di Casanova e sull’idea di egemonia culturale di Gramsci. Viene condotta un’analisi del discorso su due serie di documenti: i Documenti Azhar (2011) e i Documenti del Vaticano II (1965). La ricerca sostiene che il Vaticano II ha portato la Chiesa cattolica a diventare una ‘potenza egemone ecumenica’. Tuttavia, un parallelismo nel pensiero dell’Azhar gli impedisce di garantire il controllo sul campo culturale.
