Peu connu en France, le principal organisme « de secours » mennonite a pourtant œuvré sur le territoire dès la fin de la Guerre d’Espagne, en ouvrant, notamment, des maisons de convalescence pour enfants pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En dirigeant la Villa Saint-Christophe, à Canet-en-Roussillon, de 1941 à 1943, une jeune volontaire mennonite a ainsi participé au sauvetage de plusieurs enfants Juifs. Lois Gunden, reconnue « Juste parmi les nations », incarne le rapport privilégié des activités de « care » avec le sauvetage des juifs persécutés, ainsi que l’évolution du statut des femmes dans les églises mennonites américaines par le biais de l’humanitaire. The year 2020 marked the centenary of the Mennonite Central Committee. Although relatively unknown in France, the Committee, the main aid organization of the Mennonite community, was active on French soil from the end of the Spanish Civil War, primarily in establishing children’s convalescent homes during the Second World War. One young Mennonite volunteer named Lois Gunden, who managed the Villa Saint Christophe in Canet-en-Roussillon from 1941 to 1943, helped rescue Jewish children from extermination by the Nazis. As such, Gunden, who was posthumously recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations,” exemplifies the significant contribution of care organizations in the rescue of the persecuted Jews and the growing status of women in American Mennonite churches through their humanitarian contribution. Das Mennonite Central Committee hat 2020 sein einhundertjähriges Bestehen gefeiert. Diese mennonitische Hilfseinrichtung ist in Frankreich kaum bekannt, obwohl sie dort seit dem Ende des Kriegs in Spanien tätig war, insbesondere durch die Eröffnung von Erholungsheimen für Kinder während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Als Leiterin der Villa Saint-Christophe in Canet-en-Roussillon hat eine junge mennonitische Freiwillige von 1941-1943 zur Rettung von mehreren jüdischen Kindern beigetragen. Lois Gunden wurde als „Gerechte unter den Völkern“ anerkannt, sie steht für die enge Verbindung der Aktivitäten von „care“ mit der Rettung der verfolgten Juden, aber auch für die Fortentwicklung der Stellung der Frauen in den amerikanischen Mennonitenkirchen über humanitäre Aktionen. |
