Description
Summary:This paper focuses on Luigia Nitti-Dolci's (1903-1939) researches on Prakrit grammars, which led to the publication of Les grammairiens prakrits (1938), of the editions of Puruṣottama's Prākr̥tānuśāsana (1938) and the first śākhā of Rāmaśarman's Prākr̥takalpataru (1939). By analysing both the historical background and the contribution of Nitti-Dolci's teachers, i.e. Sylvain Lévi and Jules Bloch, it aims to shed light on the development of Indological studies in Europe before World War ii. Moreover, it focuses on the manuscripts used by Nitti-Dolci, namely those brought back from Nepal by Lévi himself and those collected in India by George A. Grierson, analysing the function of Prakrit grammars as part of South-Asian cultural framework. (English)
