En présentant un arc narratif pour l’étude de la religion au Canada, le livre offre un modèle de la façon dont une historiographie nuancée pourrait s’intéresser aux questions contemporaines (à la fois spécifiques au domaine et plus largement) sans réduire le passé à un propos sur ou pour nous. Évitant les pièges du travail de récupération et de la projection rétrospective, Hughes considère les archives selon leurs propres termes tout en restant conscient du fait qu’elles ne parlent jamais d’elles-mêmes. Avoiding the trappings of recovery work as well as retrospective projection, Hughes considers the archive on its own terms while remaining cognizant of the fact that it never speaks for itself. This brief response essay greets the occasion the book provides to think about the structural framework that shapes the “how” of an academic discourse. |
