| Summary: | This article seeks to highlight special features from selected depictions of the prophet Habakkuk in the visual arts. Habakkuk was a prophet of judgment at the end of the 7th century BC, who called the people of Israel to repentance while accusing God of having called the Babylonians into the land as executors of the punishment against His chosen people. In the liturgy of the church, the message of this prophet is rarely encountered. All the more striking is his frequent representation especially in ecclesiastical art. This is largely due to his core message, “the right- eous will live by faith” (Hab 2,4), and to the interpretation of his book by the Church Fathers, who discovered references to the resurrection of Jesus Christ and to the devotion of the Holy Mary. Finally, the connection with the later prophet Daniel provided ample material to even recognize his message as an announcement of the Eucharist. |
