| Summary: | Emphasizing the plurality of religious traditions in South Africa, while allowing for both the oppressive and liberatory dimensions of these traditions, the humanizing promises of religion are defined as important factors in the political reconstruction process. Recognizing the need for a national catharsis as a basis for a constituting event, the contribution of religion to culture, civil society, the needs of the poor and an obligation to end violence are discussed. This is done in relation to what are seen to be two enduring religious principles: revolutionary vision and political realism. |
