Description
Summary:This article reflects on the practice of Tombstone Unveiling, a recentphenomenon among Shona Christians in Zimbabwe, as a case of religiouschange. Historically, many church doctrines and practices have been negativetowards African Traditional Religions (ATRs). Shona Christians have reactedby trying to accommodate the two religious traditions and through effortsto replace some Shona religious practices with similar conceptual categoriesanchored in Christianity. Beyond the reactions of accommodation andreplacement are external social factors which include modernisation andurbanisation. It is noted that the dynamics of religious change are not onlylocated at the points of contact between the two religious traditions but arealso internal.
