| Summary: | The "trifunctional" structure through which the comparatist Georges Dumézil identifies the three constitutive functions of early Indo-European society should by its very nature be absent from a Semitic text such as the Hebrew Bible. Dumézil himself took the trouble to refute the temptation to find it there. Despite his warnings, this article nevertheless proposes to read the continuation of the first three kings of Israel according to this reading grid. A breach thus opens up in the ethnic specificity defended by Dumézil, and a crucial question arises: Can an Indo-European influence on certain aspects of the Old Testament be admitted or should the Dumézilian discoveries be revoked in doubt? La structure « trifonctionnelle » à travers laquelle le comparatiste Georges Dumézil identifie les trois fonctions constitutives de la société indo-européenne primitive devrait par nature être absente d’un texte sémitique comme la Bible hébraïque. Dumézil lui-même a d’ailleurs pris la peine de réfuter les tentations de l’y retrouver ; mais, en dépit de ses avertissements, le présent article propose tout de même de lire la suite des trois premiers rois d’Israël selon cette grille de lecture. Une brèche s’ouvre ainsi dans la spécificité ethnique défendue par Dumézil, et une question cruciale se pose : peut-on admettre une influence indo-européenne sur certains aspects de l’Ancien Testament ou doit-on révoquer en doute les découvertes duméziliennes ? |
