Description
Summary:The article investigates an important topic of St. Thomas Aquinas' theory of human action. Human actions can be specified in a twofold way: as natural events (secundum genus naturae) and as moral acts (secundum genus moris). – The article discusses this thesis from ontological, ethical and theological points of view. What is a human action? Do different specifications multiply actions numerically? What does it mean for a human action to be good or evil? Are there theologically significant aspects of a philosophical theory of human actions? – The aim of the article is not to provide immanent investigations of Aquinas' textes only. It tries to actualize his theories, too. Considering Aquinas' thesis of twofold specification of human actions, modern naturalistic approaches to human actions can be criticized under various aspects: Aspects concerning the relation between agents and their actions, and those concerning the naturalistic account of individuation of human actions. Finally it is shown that problems of ethical naturalism can be related to naturalistic theories of human actions.
