| Summary: | Before the eighteenth century, the painting of heroes in art usually served to enhance the reputation of monarchs, or to celebrate their military victories. From the time of the French Revolution, we see a new emphasis on the hero sacrificing himself for the sake of his fatherland. More recently, artists have focussed more on lesser individuals, or even tried to depict scenes from the perspective of the victims of war or politics. The unknown soldier heroically giving up his life in battle for his country was a favourite theme of Nazi artists. |
