Description
Summary:This article examines the relationship between Prov 31:10-31 (the *éiet hayil acrostic) and Song 6:4-10, arguing that the passage in the Song is a deliberate subversion of the acrostic. The argument hinges on the relationship between Prov 31:28, “Her sons rise up and extoll her; her husband praises her,” and Song 6:9b, “Daughters see her and extoll her; queens and concubines praise her.” Based on a linguistic analysis of these two lines in the broader context of the language of the acrostic and the Song of Songs, this study concludes that Song 6:9b is derivative of Prov 31:28. The article goes on to discuss the significance of the Song’s subversion of the acrostic, contrasting the feminine ideals presented in the two biblical texts and surveying the ways that women and sexual relationships are portrayed in biblical and ancient Egyptian wisdom literature and love poetry.
