| Summary: | In The Rationalization of Miracles, Paolo Parigi turns his attention to a remarkably stable and durable organization, the Roman Catholic Church, and seeks to understand the processes that led to the framework of modern sainthood, a framework that persisted from the late sixteenth to the late twentieth centuries. Drawing on rich, original research from archives, most notably from the Vatican Secret Archive, he uses primarily quantitative methods, especially network analysis, to analyze Church decisions about what defines a true miracle performed by candidates for sainthood. The result is a strong contribution to our understanding of the relationship between organizations and social movements and the process of rationalization of religion in Europe. |
