Description
Summary:In a descriptive sense, “pluralism” has become a ubiquitous moniker for the diversity marking contemporary religious life. Prescriptively, it is shorthand for ideals of tolerance and freedom of religious expression. Testing Pluralism: Globalizing Belief, Localizing Gods considers both uses of the term. Most of the 12 chapters in the collection are case studies meant to illustrate processes of religious diversification in the postmodern setting. Of these, four are dedicated to religious developments in Italy. Emanuela Contiero's chapter on Renewal of the Spirit shows how the movement's expressive, democratized approach to spirituality has introduced significant elements of differentiation within Italian Catholicism.
