Summary: | Abstract Using endowment deeds (waqfiyyāt) and court decisions (aḥkām) recorded in the sijill of the Sharīʿa Court of Jerusalem during the period of British rule in Palestine (1917-1948), I analyze three aspects of family Waqf: The right of females to transmit their entitlement to the next generation; the treatment of males and females; and the entitlement of orphaned grandchildren. These patterns are compared to the patterns of devolution that result from the application of Islamic inheritance law. |
