| Summary: | The donor inscription from Aphrodisias offers important information on the involvement of Jews in ancient civic life. One donor served as a palatinus, a highranking official in the Roman imperial bureaucracy. The dekania, the organization responsible for the inscription, established an alimentary program that aided the residents of Aphrodisias. Local conditions, specifically the absence in Aphrodisias of a magistrate in charge of the grain supply, and not rabbinic authority, best explain the program's development. Through its actions the dekania assumed a role normally performed by civic magistrates, and in so doing became active participants in the social and administrative life of Aphrodisias. L'inscription de donateurs nous offre des renseignements importants sur la participation des Juifs à la vie civique antique. Un des donateurs servit de palatinus, un fonctionnaire de haut rang dans la bureaucratie impériale romaine. La dekania, l'organisme chargé de l'inscription, établit un programme alimentaire pour aider les habitants d'Aphrodisias. Ce sont les conditions locales, notamment l'absence de magistrat responsable de l'approvisionnement de grain à Aphrodisias, et non pas l'autorité rabbinique, qui expliquent le mieux le développement de ce programme. Par ses actions, la dekania assuma un rôle ordinairement exécuté par des magistrats civiques, et ce faisant devint un participant actif à la vie sociale et administrative d'Aphrodisias. |
