Description
Summary:A theoretical effort to discover the possible impact of significant others on the attitudes of Roman Catholic priests toward recent changes in Church tradition, authority, and liturgical practices illustrates how variables other than age might affect attitudes. Evidence suggests that the type of seminary training and the priest's occupational history have an influence on the attitudes tapped by a mailed questionnaire which included scales measuring Liturgical, Authority, and Tradition items. Responses, when controlled for age, vary for some items, but not for others. Responses for a third category of items are fragmented across age categories. Age therefore would assist in attitude prediction in some areas, but would be inadequate in others. Seminary training and priestly work experience merit further study as possible predictors of attitudes. A final section discusses the possibility of wider applicability of the findings.
