Summary: | Friedrichs contends that the détente existing between theology and the sciences of man over the past two to three generations is no longer operative. B. F. Skinner's work challenging the place of religion in society is in fact an opening cannonade. The recently issued Humanist Manifesto further marks this rupture of relationship. But despite these signs, the irrevocable link between the theological community and its focus upon ultimate concern" and a social and behavioral science that cannot avoid recourse to ethical norms must be reinforced. For if these voices and talents were stilled within those associations and journals focusing on the scientific study of religion itself, there would be little hope of their expression elsewhere. |
