| Summary: | The purpose of this paper is to document and assess the causes and consequences of radical social and cultural change among the Franconia Conference Mennonites during the years 1945 to 1970. The focus is on the shift in the value orientation of the group from a position of separation from and nonconformity to the outside world to an attitude of cooperation with and evangelism towards outsiders. It is suggested that the way any minority religious community manages the potential tension between these two contradictory ideals will determine whether it ultimately dies, survives, or maintains a constant membership level. |
