Description
Summary:The effects of knowledge and experience criteria in the report of mystical experience was investigated in a sample of 292 persons who were nominally classified as mystical (N = 106), nonmystical (N = 60), or uncertain (N = 126). Ninety-one criteria of mysticism employed in the empirical literature were evaluated by all persons as to (1) knowledge criteria and (2) experiential criteria of mysticism. Factor analysis of the experience ratings for the affirmative group produced five factors. As predicted, the experience ratings for total and component factors of the group affirming mystical experience were significantly greater than the ratings of the other groups. In addition, the prediction that the three groups would not differ in their knowledge ratings was generally supported, holding for four of the component factors. A third prediction, that persons affirming mysticism would have higher experience than knowledge ratings or equivalent ratings, was generally supported as was the prediction that for the combined uncertain/no groups, knowledge ratings would exceed or be equivalent to experience ratings.
