| Summary: | This report presents survey data on activists who supported the National Federation of Decency (NFD) picket against 7-Eleven convenience stores August 6, 1984. The respondents represent volunteer group leaders from across the United States. Two issues are addressed: First, the data are examined to assess the relative adequacy of structural status-discontent versus culture-socialization theories as explanations of activism in a moral reform movement. In addition, a descriptive picture of anti-pornography activists is offered in an attempt to specify the variables in their culture-socialization that lead them to this posture. "Cultural fundamentalism," rooted in religious fundamentalism, manifests itself in a variety of ways that give anti-pornography activism transcendent urgency that reinforces this-worldly moral endeavor. |
