Summary:Using data from the 1988 General Social Survey, an index of religious dogmatism is developed. Dogmatism is predicted by doctrinal orthodoxy and public religious activity, and is in turn a significant predictor of attitudes toward a number of issues involving personal freedom. However, doctrinal orthodoxy and membership in evangelical denominations retain their importance in predicting these attitudes, even when dogmatism is controlled.
