| Summary: | This research is directed toward an investigation of the relationship between certain socio-demographic factors and fertility. The chief source of data for this study is the U.S. Census of Population, 1960, Puerto Rico. Ecological correlations are used to describe the association between the socio-demographic variables and the overall cumulative fertility rate for the 75 municipios in Puerto Rico.Ecological correlations show that the cumulative fertility of Puerto Rican women is associated with measures of income, education, labor force status, population, and journey to work. The highest correlations are found for the income and education variables. The findings indicate that the traditional inverse relationship between fertility, income and education obtains in Puerto Rico. |
