Summary: | Data on family-size preferences of a 1964–1967 cohort of Catholic college women are reanalyzed using standardized matrices and analysis of covariance. The earlier Westoff and Potvin conclusion that the higher fertility preferences of these women educated in Catholic colleges was in part a function of selectivity is sustained, but the conclusion that the Catholic college also maintained high levels is to be modified somewhat. Different types of college affected the general decline in famíly-size preferences over the four years in different ways depending on the type of high school attended. Though the data are somewhat dated, their reanalysis suggests that changes in preferences should be studied with a model that differentiates individual probabilities of change from group effects, especially if selectivity is a factor. |
