Summary: | This study focuses upon two major questions concerning civil religion in America: (1) When in life are civil religious orientations initially acquired? and (2) Are civil religious orientations associated with the acquisition of other social and political attitudes? Analysis of data based upon a survey of 825 elementary school children in downstate Illinois suggests that civil religious orientations are learned during childhood, that they are held by a large proportion of elementary school children across both parochial and public school systems, and that these civil religious orientations are associated with the manner in which children relate to their political world. |
