| Summary: | This paper presents a research instrument to be used in the quantitative study of ritual. The instrument is used to test Ducey's typology of religious ritual. To determine the fit between his typology and existing rituals, questionnaires were sent to all Christian churches in “Middletown” (N 217). Fifty-two percent of the clergy returned the forms, describing the “main religious service” at their churches. The results suggested the desirability of a dimensional rather than a typological framework. Three ritual dimensions are discussed. The paper notes the great variety of rituals in Middle-town, and comments are made on the relations between ritual style and church structure. The paper concludes with a reexamination of Ducey's work. |
