| Summary: | This study examines a range of religious responses to the dual status of people with AIDS (PWAs) as simultaneously “sinners” and sick. Responses include: defining AIDS as a divine punishment or as the “natural” outcome of a “sinful” lifestyle, separating AIDS from issues of sexual morality to allow for a more rational response, and expressing compassion for the “sinner” while hating the “sin.” Data for this study come from both a variety of religious periodicals and official statements of religious denominations. |
