| Summary: | Religious discourse, as theology, has played an important role in the political life of Peru. Theology has come to the forefront of both political and religious debate in the conflict over the structure and function of Christian communities. My article focuses on the newly formed Roman Catholic movement, Sodalitium Vitae, and its role in the debate over liberation theology. I argue that the creation of Sodalitium Vitae, as well as its reformation of liberation theology into the theology of reconciliation, is an extension of the conflict over the political strategies of the popular sector and the polarization of the Peruvian Church over these issues. The data on Sodalitium Vitae were gathered through field research I conducted in Peru from September, 1987 to May, 1988. |
