Summary: | Placed at the crossroads of exceedingly diverse influences, from Catholicism to German idealism, having passed through the Deism of the Enlightenment along the way, the Saint-Simonian religion poses delicate problems of interpretation. The religious vision developed by Saint-Simon must be distinguished from that progressively coined by his disciples. The accent placed upon spontaneous human activity constitutes, on the other hand, a common trait. Apart from these problems of interpretation, the motives and attitudes of Saint-Simonian religious practice remain to be considered. Notwithstanding its ambiguities, it bears witness to a demand for spiritual renewal that expresses itself during the first half of the 19th century. |
