Summary:The fifth epistle “On Music” of the Brethren of Purity is a precious testimony of the Islamic culture in the tenth century, which offers to us a complete statement about the music theory of the time. The Brethren of Purity treat the music in every respect, from the nature of sound to the instruments crafting; from the celestial music to that properly human and its applications. The most relevant application reported by the Brethren is the medical, and we can find in their theory a fascinating weaving of Greek and Arabic knowledge. We can find at the same time philosophy, esoteric doctrines, astronomy, and so on. Therefore the fifth epistle is a fundamental text to enlightened the history of music in the Islamic world.
